Doing wash was one of the most difficult and dangerous household chores. Linens were soaked in tubs of boiling water with lye and other harsh detergents, hand agitated with a plunger or scrubbed on a washboard. The laundress hung the load on a line outside to dry or ran the items through a mangler to wring out moisture. In a day prior to laundromats, enterprising black women from East End took in washing to supplement their income. They would collect baskets of dirty linen on Mondays, clean, starch and press the items and return them later in the week.
